THE WWF NEW GENERATION ERA PROJECT: RAW REVIEW WEEK 27

07.26.1993

Doink kicks this mother off talking about the Macho Man. He's pissed that a few weeks ago Savage interfered in his match with Crush. It was the big RAW match where Savage pulled the real Doink out from under the ring. Doink said that if Savage was a good "Macho Boy" he might get a special surprise tonight. DIG IT.

Also Stu and Helen Hart are in the crowd.

BAM BAM BIGELOW vs. BRET "HITMAN" HART
This one started off great with Bret taking it to Bammer in a big way. Then Bret went up top and did what looked like a flying Thesz Press, but his legs were extended and the left one bent sideways under Bigelow's back. It was pretty bad because Bret had to take the whole commercial break to get over it. Bigelow was tremendous during this, doing cartwheel's and taunting the crowd while Bret recuperated. Bret eventually got his legs back under him and the match really started to come together in the second half. Then Jerry Lawler came out.

Lawler came out and started harassing Stu and Helen in the upper deck. He was cracking some great one liners that only Lawler can deliver. Eventually Bret had enough and left the ring to get to Lawler. This meant he was counted out and Bammer won. It's too bad this match had a rough start and a rough ending because Bigelow and Hart really work well together.

MR. HUGHES vs.ROSS MOTHER F'N GREENBERG
YES. Greenberg is back and is selling is still ridiculous. Early on it looked like Hughes was just holding his head, preparing to headbutt him, and Greenberg just started selling his head like he was under a psychic attack from Jean Grey. Every squash is better with Ross Greenberg involved
Legend.

THE SMOKING GUNNS vs. DUANE GILL & GLEN RUTH
Man it's like the Jobber All-Stars tonight. First Greenberg and now Gill and Ruth. This match actually runs a little too long for what they did. Gunns never looked in danger and anything longer than 3 minutes is kind of too much for that kind of match.

LEX WILL ANSWER YOU RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES
Lex Luger had a quiet sitdown with Vince McMahon and gave a nice quiet interview with Vicne. One of the keys was that he didn't care about the stipulation calling for him to pad his elbow, he just was happy to have the match. They kind of had this poilitcal candidate feel, with Vince asking if Luger was prepared to tell the fans about who he is and what he stands for. It makes me wish him and Yoko had a townhall style debate leading up to the match. It's actually a neat interview and Luger came across very honest and genuine in it. It's a nice contrast to the regular loud and intense promos you get from most wrestlers.

DOINK THE CLOWN vs. PHIL APOLLO
Pretty good Doink squash match, but that's no surprise. He tooled this guy on the mat and busted out a nice fireman's carry take down and a solid belly to belly suplex. After he finished off Apollo with a nasty Whoopie Cushion, he got on the mic to have a talk with Savage.

Looks like Linda is hanging in the the White Collar Douchebag section.
Doink challenged Savage to a match next week and told him that he wouldn't be seeing double, he'd be seeing triple vision. Then a second Doink popped up in the ring and a third popped up in the stands. Savage said "If next week is the official reentering of the Macho Man into the ring, that's cool, that's hip, that's an 'oh yeah' right there." I love that man.

OVERALL SHOW
Really solid show with a couple of decent squashes against some great jobbers. The Bigelow/Hart match could have been a lot better but there was some flashes of greatness here and there so it's not a total wash. Really like the build of the Lawler/Hart angle, even though I don't buy Lawler as a legit threat to anyone in this company, despite my USWA upbringing would have me believe otherwise.

The best news is that next week we get my favorite wrestler vs. Doink the Clown. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.
