WWF NEW GENERATION ERA PROJECT: SUMMERSLAM SPECTACULAR 8.22.1993

I'm just doing the big three matches from this event. It bugs me a little, but I'm ready to get to the actual SummerSlam.

YOKOZUNA vs. JIM DUGGAN
Link:  http://youtu.be/Ht0XPUEbo_w
Really liked the build up of trying to knock down Yoko. Duggan played his roll perfectly. He was energetic, playful and intense, and the crowd was eating it up. Personally I would have rather seen Yoko not get knocked down and look weaker than Duggan a week before SummerSlam, but it was still a fun short match.

SHAWN MICHAELS vs. BOB BACKLUND

I love these two together. They're perfect opposites. Shawn treats Backlund like a jobber at first by not taking the situation seriously, but Backlund jacks him up with some bodyslams. Jim Ross is fantastic at conveying this story to the audience, telling Shawn that maybe it's time to "wake up".

Keep an eye on how Backlund escapes the front facelock, too. Takes his time and builds up to it. Instead of lifting Shawn up immediately, he seems to be shifting his body into the best position for optimal leverage. And then when he finally picks him up he pays it all off with a tremendous slap. And how about that Atomic Drop? That's the first time I ever believed an Atomic Drop could finish a guy.

I wish we could see more of these two. This is the second match I've seen between them and both leave wanting so much more.  Fun match.

STEEL CAGE MATCH
THE STEINERS vs. MONEY INC

This looked like they didn't plan anything, and they just went out and slugged each other for 18 minutes. It's wild seeing a Steiner match in which neither Steiner suplexed anyone. This was all about trying to escape. There was probably never a moment in the match where someone wasn't trying to climb out. It felt like they were playing it for real, as opposed to just having a match and then trying to escape. Schyster was good here, as he showed a lot of brains, like when he climbed back in when he saw that his team didn't have the advantage or when he took his tie off and used it against the Steiners like they did to him.

The finish was pretty sweet with Rick just sucking it up until Scotty could get out. If I saw this the week before SummerSlam I'd say there wasn't a chance in hell the Heavenly Bodies were going to win. Steiners are just to strong and too awesome.

  1. That Steiners vs. Money Inc. cage is one of my all-time favorite cage matches. Great psychology and a really cool finish.
